Introduction

The National Sun Yat-Sen University (NSYSU) is located in Kaohsiung City, center of the largest and most successful industrial sectors in Taiwan. The campus is on the coastal bay of Kaohsiung harbor and famous for its beautiful scenery. In order to deal with the environmental impacts resulting from the rapid economic growth and industrial development in Taiwan, the Institute of Environmental Engineering was established in August 1991. The chief objectives of the Institute are:

  • To cultivate advanced environmental engineers and researchers;

  • To conduct fundamental researches and to enhance applied technologies; and

  • To provide services in both the technical projects and extended education.

After eight years of development, the institute has become one of the nation’s leading environmental research and education center with distinguished faculties and superb academic programs. Currently, there are six full-time faculty members, two adjunct faculty members, one full-time technician, three administrative officers, eight full-time research assistants, and 60 graduate students, including 18 students in the doctoral program.

The faculty members, who received their doctoral degrees in the environmental-related fields from well-known universities, have national and local reputations in teaching and research. The total
value of the Institute's research contracts and grants now exceeds 9,000 millions with annual
research expenditures of approximately 2,000 millions.

In the pages that follow, you will learn in more detail regarding the programs that we provide and why we are so extraordinarily proud of our institute. Words and pictures, however vivid, are no substitute for first-hand experience. We encourage you to make a trip to our Institute, to visit the faculty and staffs, and to see by yourself the exceptional opportunities for the graduate study, extended education, professional services, and cooperative programs available at our institute.

A. Education Program

The Institute of Environmental Engineering offers the graduate curriculum and research training leading to advanced degrees of Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). The education program aims to cultivate advanced environmental engineers with the capabilities of independent research, technical development, policy-making, and leadership.

B. Research Program
Research areas of emphasis include air quality and air pollution control technology, drinking water and water pollution
treatment technology, solid and liquid waste treatment, remediation of contaminated soils and groundwater, green energy and resources, envronment and sustainable environmental management, and emerging contaminants analysis and processing  technology. Both fundamental and applied researches are equally emphasized.

C. Service Program
The Institute accepts contract projects from governments, research institutes, public organizations,and private companies. The projects include research, management, investigation, analysis, and assessment. In addition, several short-term on-job training and extended education programs are provided for the off-campus persons.
